Choosing the right size figure can make all the difference to a model aircraft, boat or railway scene. This guide explains scale in simple terms and shows what to measure before ordering.
What does 1:24 scale mean?
At 1:24 scale, the model is 24 times smaller than the real object. A person who is 180 cm tall in real life would be approximately 75 mm tall as a standing 1:24 scale figure.

These heights are a guide. Real people vary in height, and a seated figure will have different overall dimensions from a standing one.
For model aircraft
Measure the cockpit opening, seat width and distance from the seat to the canopy. If the pilot needs to hold a control stick, check the position of the hands as well as the figure’s height.
For model boats
Check the available space at the helm, in the cabin or on deck. For seated crew, measure the seat and the distance to the wheel or controls. A photograph of the space with a ruler beside it can help us advise you.
For model railways
Compare a standing figure with nearby doors, platforms, vehicles and other figures. Always check the height in millimetres shown on the product listing, as this makes it easier to judge how the figure will look on your layout.
What if I do not know my model’s scale?
Measure a feature you know, such as a seat, doorway or cockpit opening. Send us those measurements with a photograph of your model, and tell us where the figure needs to fit. We can help you work out a suitable size.
